Yanagawa Shigenobu

Shigenobu Yanagawa (Shigenobu Yanagawa, 7th year of Tenmei <1787> --- November 28th, 3rd year of Tenpo ) is an ukiyo-e artist in the late Edo period.

A student of Katsushika Hokusai. His surname is Suzuki and his first name is Shigebei. They are called Raito, Kotosai, Suzusai, and Ameshosai. He was born in Edo and lived in Yanagawa-cho, so he named him Yanagawa. He became a master of Hokusai and mastered the painting method of his teacher. He married Hokusai's eldest daughter, Miyo, and adopted him, but later divorced. It is said that he returned to his parents' house at this time. The issue of "Raito" was handed over from Hokusai.

The drawing period is from culture to the time of Tenpo, and although many of his works are nishiki-e and reading book illustrations, he also leaves hand-drawn beauty paintings. From the 5th year of Bunsei (1822) to around the spring of the following year, he went to Osaka and painted a landscape painting of a famous Naniwa flower with the signature "Shigenobu Yanagawa, Tohto". He also draws actor pictures, influencing the painters of Kamigatae and raising his disciples in Osaka. Shigenobu's Bijin-ga was known for its unique style of painting, which was strongly influenced by the Utagawa school and Keisai Eisen of the same period, rather than the Katsushika school, but there were many points of confusion. At the age of 46, the graveyard is Sokeiji Temple in Shitaya Sakamoto, Taito-ku. The second generation Yanagawa Shigenobu, Yanagawa Nobusada (Yukinobu), and Yanagawa Kuninao are among the students.
