Yamazaki Toshinobu

Toshinobu Yamazaki (4th year of Ansei (1857) -September 15, 1886) was an ukiyo-e artist who was active in the early Meiji era. Known for Nishiki-e and newspaper illustrations.

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka's master. Born in Senju, Edo. His surname is Yamazaki or Saito, and his first name is Tokusaburo. They were called Sensai, Nansai, Kureen, Fusoen, and Donkai. My father was a vegetable wholesaler. Due to his poor family, he couldn't go on the path to develop his talent for painting, but around 1870, he was introduced to the ukiyo-e artist Yoshitoshi Tsukioka at the age of 13 and was recognized as Toshinobu. There are two theories about how to get started. One is the theory that when he was training as a kid at a lantern shop, the picture drawn on the Shinto lantern became popular, and the other was that Yoshitoshi was dedicated at the barber shop instead of the lantern shop. It is said that the picture drawn on the barber's outer door shoji became a hot topic among the disciples of Yoshitoshi who passed by the neighborhood, and a person who spared his talent introduced it to Yoshitoshi.
