Utagawa Yoshitora

Yoshitora Utagawa (birth and death unknown) is an ukiyo-e artist from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period. From the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Edo period, he was one of the painters who was active alongside Sadahide Utagawa.

A student of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. His real name is Nagashima and his first name is Tatsugoro (or Tatsunosuke and Tatsusaburo). In honor of Utagawa, it was called Ichitakesai, Mengsai, Kinchoro, etc. In Kaei 3 (1850), he lived in the Rokuzaemon store in Minamisayacho. Later, he lived in Hasegawa Town, Nakahashi Matsukawa Town 2, and Kanda Kajicho 6 in the Meiji era. He became a student of Kuniyoshi at the age of 11, and began drawing around Tenpo (1830-1844). He excels in the warrior paintings that Kuniyoshi was good at, and there are also masterpieces such as the Kinshodou version of the actor Okubi-e in the actor paintings. An example is "Shindo Saemon Musume Yude de Bando Mitsugoro". He was also active in the Bijin-ga series, sumo-e, and Yokohama-e, and was an active painter at the end of the Edo period. Sumo-e has left the most works among Kuniyoshi.
