Utagawa Toyoharu

Utagawa Toyoharu (Kyoho 20th year <1735> --Culture 11th January 12th <1814 March 3rd>) is an ukiyo-e artist in the middle of the Edo period. The ancestor of the Utagawa school.

The surname is Utagawa. The name is Masaki. Popular name Tajimaya Shojiro. Later changed to Shinemon. Since he lived in Udagawa-cho, Shiba, he is said to have called himself Udagawa. It is called Ichiryusai, Submarine Ryusai, Matsujiro, etc. There are three theories about the place of birth, Usuki in Bungo, Toyooka in Tajima, and Edo, and I haven't seen the established theory yet. It is completely strange for the ancestor of the Utagawa school who formed a monopoly power in the Ukiyo-e world at the end of the Edo period. However, in recent years, new materials have been presented, and the third generation Toshi Gonjuro = Toyoharu Doujinshi, who served as a painter for the Usuki Domain, is becoming influential. In Edo, he lived in Shiba Mishima Town, Osaka Town, Tamachi Town, Nakahashi, Himono Town, Akasaka Tamachi, etc.

Regarding Toyoharu's teachers, it is said that he first went up to Kyoto and learned from the Kano school Tsurusawa Tangei, and then went to Edo to study under Toriyama Sekien during the Horeki calendar. Not known. In addition to this, there are those who record that he was a student of Shigenaga Nishimura or Toyonobu Ishikawa, but since the source of these theories is unknown, the movements of the study period including the origin of Toyoharu are completely vague. .. In recent years, the Toriyama Sekien theory is the most prominent among them.
