Toshusai Sharaku

Sharaku Toshusai (Sharaku, Tojusai Sharaku, birth and death unknown) is an ukiyo-e artist in the middle of the Edo period. He is known as a mysterious painter who suddenly disappeared from his painting business after printing actor paintings and other works in a short period of about 10 months. Various studies have been conducted on its origin and career, but nowadays, Jurobe Saito, the Noh actor of the Hachisuka clan, the lord of the Awa Tokushima domain, is in the 13th year of the Horeki (1763) --the 3rd year of Bunsei <1820. Year>) is the predominant theory.

Sharaku has more than 145 points within a period of about 10 months from May 1794 to January 1795 (there is a leap November in 6th year of Kansei). The work is being printed.

Kirazuri, a large-sized 28-size actor's Okubi-e, published in May 6th year of Kansei, makes full use of deformation and exaggerates facial features such as wrinkles, eagle nose, and socket of the eyes, and boldly boldly expresses the individuality of the actor. It was a unique work that had never been seen before, with skillful drawing and dynamic facial expressions and poses. The unique work cannot help leaving a strong impression. Representative works include "Ichikawa Ebizo's Takemura Sadanoshin," "Sandai Sakata Hangoro's Fujikawa Mizuemon," "Sandaime Otani Oniji's Guy Edobei," and "Arashi Ryuzo's Money Lending Ishibe Kinkichi." All the seals of this period are "Sharaku paintings by Toshusai".
