He was active mainly in the Tenmei period between Harunobu Suzuki and Utamaro Kitagawa, and is one of the six major ukiyo-e artists along with Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige. In particular, it is a magnificent eight-headed beauty painting, which is highly regarded worldwide today.

A student of Torii Kiyomitsu. A child of Ichibei Sekiguchi, a bookstore Shirokoya in Edo Honbashi Town (now Nihonbashi). Mr. Seki. The popular name is Ichibei (Shinsuke in one theory). The shop name is Shirokoya. It was also called "Kiyocho Shinba" because of where he lived.

Debuted in 1767 with a fine-sized Benizuri-e. From the age of 19, he called himself Kiyonaga (the first issue is called Chobei), and Yasunaga (1772-1781) left about 110 fine-sized actors in the year. From around 7-8 (1778-1779), the Torii school style gradually disappeared, and under the influence of the caricature actors such as Katsukawa Shunsho, which was popular at that time, Benizuri-e changed to fine-sized nishiki-e. It changes, but the production of actor pictures is scarce. Instead, the production of medium format bijin-ga and kibyoshi illustrations will increase. The yellow cover began to be drawn in Anei 4 (1775), and has been illustrated in more than 120 works until Tenmei 2 (1782). It was the center of drawing during this period.
