Shotei Hokuju

Shotei Hokuju (birth and death unknown) is an ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period.

A student of Katsushika Hokusai. The surname is unknown, and the first name is Issei. They are called Shotei, Hokuju, and Hokuju. It is said that he was an early student of Hokusai and lived in Ryogoku Yakukenbori. The drawing period is said to be from the end of the Kansei era to the Bunsei era, and most of the works are landscape paintings, but genre paintings, illustrations of mad song books, surimono, and hand-drawn paintings are also left. It is known that he was already well-received at that time because he was described as "good at Hokuju uki-e" in the article of "Takee Chronology" during the Kyowa period. Hokusai's landscape paintings are said to have inherited the Western-style expression of Hokusai, and many editions have been published by publishers such as Eijudo and Eikudo.

In addition, "Ukiyo-e Shiden" is a work by Hokuju, and is "62 years old" in "Kiyomasa Kimiyuki statue" of "Kakemono of hand-painted paintings in 1824". Therefore, it is stated that Hokuju was born in the 13th year of the Horeki (1763), but the whereabouts of this "Kiyomasa Kimiyuki statue" are currently unknown. It is assumed that the second volume of "Primary Color Ukiyo-e Encyclopedia" and others died at the age of 62 or older after the 7th year of Bunsei. In addition, at Mishima Shrine in Ushiku Town, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, two votive tablets dedicated during the 7th year of Kaei (1854) and the Ansei period are transmitted, and these are "Shotei" and "Shotei Hokuju". Although there is a seal of Hokuju, it is 30 years after the 7th year of Bunsei, which is the lower limit of the drawing period of Hokuju, and it is problematic to make these the works of Hokuju.
