Katsukawa Shun'Ei

Katsukawa Shunei (Katsukawa Shunei, Horeki 12 <1762>-Bunsei 2 October 26 ) is an ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period.

A master of Katsukawa Shunsho. His real surname is Isoda and his first name is Kujiro. They are called Kutokusai and Asahi Tokusai. Born in Edo, he was the landlord of Shin-Izumicho. The family line is unknown. He became a master of Shunsho early and drew his first work at the age of 17 in Anei 7 (1778). Many fine-sized and medium-sized works were seen, and actor pictures such as Kirazuri's Okubi-e "Sandaime Ichikawa Yaozou" were released in tandem with Sharaku. In the 4th year of Kansei (1792), a four-sheet series (or five-sheet series) entitled "The Play in Osaka" was published by the Koshodo in Edo, and it is said that it went up in the New Year of the same year. After all, Koshodo has published several Okubi-e, the actors of Kirazuri, prior to Sharaku. When "Kanamoto Tadaomizo" was performed in the three seats of Edo's capital, Kiriza, and Kawarasakiza in 1795, Shun'ei drew a play of the capital and Kiriza from Iwatoya. "Kakogawa Honzo of the 3rd generation Sawamura Sojuro" is published. In addition, there is a nishiki-e "Oshi-egata", which is a beautiful woman's painting drawn in the image of Kabuki's work.
